Gabrini Matte Lipgloss: Review & Swatches

written by Olivia Akumu January 17, 2017

Lip products are by far the easiest product to pick up when make up shopping. I think anytime I enter a beauty store or chemist, or supermarket I’m subconsciously on the look out for some kind of lip product. There are a million colours just calling your name, ready to swatch and waaay to easy to throw into your basket in multiples. I mean look at this, or this…it’s a genuine problem. So one of these exact visits (to buy hair products) I picked up two shades of the Gabrini Matte Lipgloss. I have no idea if these are actually new or not, but it was definitely the first time I had seen them in store.

The two colours I got are Shade 05 – a mid-toned, blue-based pink and Shade 08 – a deep-toned blue-based red (tell me this isn’t a (very slightly darker) dupe for Nouba Millebaci in 46?!) There were a number of colours there (I want to say about 4/5 shades), but these are the ones I fell in love with instantly.

As you can see from the swatches above, Shade 08 (red) is much more opaque and pigmented than Shade 05 (pink) and appears to apply a lot better. Never fear however – a good lip liner all over the lip will solve this for you in a heartbeat.  The packaging is not exciting – a standard perspex tube, with a cheap-looking black lid (not that I’m discriminating, what counts is what’s inside, right?).

Formula wise – these don’t completely dry matte when you first apply them like other liquid lips formulas. They’re not wet, but they definitely don’t resemble the Chalbi desert either. Great for you if you hate that super matte feeling on your lips. If you do want a proper matte look, smack your lips together a few times to remove some of the remaining “shine”. Once they’re on you can hardly feel it and you get a great amount of wear time before it starts to fade.

VERDICT: Grab one, especially 08 it’s too good a dupe for the Nouba Millebaci not to! I picked these up at the Super Cosmetics on Koinange Street in Nairobi for just KES 395 each.

Will you be getting one of these?

The red shade no 5 looks amazing. Loved the helpful review. Though is the shop green cosmetics or super cosmetics?

Great review Olivia. I picked up one like 2 months ago I was also not sure so I just got one at the time 07 is also a really nice purple-pink shade. Obviously went back for another one I happened to get the last 08 available on that day. So pleased especially since as a bonus its also pocket friendly.

I grabbed the nude one, currently my fave nude feels so good on the lips doesn’t dry the lips like most mattes.
Wish you could do more reviews on your pretty face.

Olivia Akumu June 19, 2017 at 12:58 pm

Hi Mary, I’m not sure about who is stocking Gabrini in Nyeri. I know they stock it at Super Cosmetics and in some Chandarana supermarkets in Nairobi. For the Milani Metallic Mattes, you can order from Ken’s Pharmacy he sells them at KES 1,350: https://www.facebook.com/kenpharmacy/

I saw a no. 30 and was in love but wasn’t sure about the brand and where to get. I am glad you have positively reviewed it and also directed me on where to get an affordable piece. Online dukas are ripping us off.

Yea there’s so much exploitation going on in the Kenyan market. No need for something that costs USD 2 to be sold for KES 1500! But unfortunately it happens 🙁 I’m trying to change that with Cocoon Beauty, so if you haven’t already defo go and follow @cocoonbeautyke on Facebook & Instagram. Took a break towards the end of last year, but will be back with a BANG very soon! Thanks for taking the time to comment x

Are they still being sold at super cosmetics? I just saw an online store selling each for 1k….

Olivia Akumu May 10, 2018 at 3:30 pm

I’m not too sure! I haven’t looked for them in a while but I’d check the SC on Koinange Street in town and the Westlands store x
