Crayons and Ink Liquid Lipstick: Review & Swatches

written by Olivia Akumu April 3, 2017

When I say that as soon as I discovered these liquid lipsticks on Instagram I was sold, it’s not an exaggeration! Just know that I initially bought just one of these colours and then went back in a number of days to buy another one. It’s love y’all…

They’re by a new Kenyan cosmetics brand called Crayons and Ink that just launched on Instagram.  There are five colours in total: Honey, Huru, Kenyan Girl, Purple Reign and Queen. I picked up two of the shades: Kenyan Girl and Queen. Kenyan Girl is the perfect blue-tone red that you need in your life. It’s so similar to the Kenyan cult-favourite Nouba Millebaci #46 that you honestly don’t need both (comparisons below). And Queen is a beautiful plum colour that looks soooo good on dark skin.

The formula of these lippies is great. They have a mid-creamy consistency (by that I mean that they aren’t watery, but they aren’t super thick) which is perfect for applying a liquid lip product. If it’s too watery it will likely apply more like a tint and will go on streaky, and if it’s too thick you probably end up caking it on only to have it crack and flake on you when your purse your lips together.

The formula dries down completely matte to an almost powdery finish, and as a super lightweight feel on the lips. Once this has dried it will not move, so make sure you have an oil based cleanser to remove it from your lips at the end of the day. You do get a little bit of fading on the inner portion of your mouth, where your lips are a little bit wet. But this is very normal for a liquid lipstick and shouldn’t bother you too much – after all you can always reapply.

I love, love, love the branding and packaging of these lippies. The tubes are a sturdy perspex, with a fresh feeling silver lid. Each tube gives you 6ml of product, which is a very decent amount.

I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about these lippies, only that we need more colours! These sell for just KES 1,000. Hit up the girls on Instagram and thank me later!

They dry matte, but they really don’t feel drying on the lips. It’s incredible kind of feels like nothing!
